In this paper, Hollan attempts to demonstrate that cultural beliefs about dreams may be used more or less effectively to externalize and project internal conflicts and concerns that manifest themselves in dreams. Using data from interviews of two Toraja informants from South Sulawesi, Indonesia, Hollan describes Toraja dream beliefs, and then discusses the different ways that each informant uses widely shared cultural beliefs to interpret and make sense of their dreams.
