Hollan examines what he calls 'emotion work' among the Toraja of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Emotion work refers to the effort to shape and manipulate inner feelings. Hollan begins with the observation that the Toraja have a fear of strong emotion. Using data obtained from interviews he describes the strategies the Toraja use to shape and manage their own emotions and those of others.
