Abstract
This source contains information on power and status in Central Java. The author’s purpose was to investigate “…systems of status in Java and their relation to changes in the administrative and economic field”. Information is presented on the Javanese Regents; status and kinship among the Javanese nobility; regents and wives; maternal status, kinship, and appointments; poverty and honor; nobility and officials; Javanese-Chinese relationships; the Provisional Regional People’s Assembly; informal relationships among officials; the public recognition of status; and the transmission of power. The author concludes that systems of status have changed.
