Abstract
The content of this article is based upon the fragmentary field notes of Brooke Low edited by H. L. Roth. The following topics are discussed in this paper which was intended to be the first of a series on Iban culture: religious beliefs and practices, the theory and treatment of disease, transvestitism, funeral rites and mourning customs, festivals, status of woman and her daily routine, marriage, child care, birth and suicide. It is entirely a descriptive account. For part two of this series see 5: Roth. Mr. Low was in the Sarawak government service from 1869 until his death in 1887.
