AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is a brief report on ethnoscience and Ifugao rice lexicon. It is part of a talk Conklin gave upon receiving an honor in Paris in1984. Conklin has studied the traditional knowledge surrounding rice cultivation, and here he writes how he went about classifying the different seed varieties and learning about their particular use. Women are the local experts in this regard and they helped him in this project. He collected a hundred different varieties and learned the local classification system which employed 250 different distinguishing characteristics. The point Conklin makes is that many societies have ample information about their environment and employ a logical and complex system of classification to make use of it.
