Abstract
This is an interpretive analysis of the forms and social functions of popular riddles and tales in Sama-Bajau culture. It shows the high regard for wit and verbal adeptness evident in riddles. Together, riddles and tales served as important mechanisms in dispute resolution and community decision-making, while still entertaining both the storyteller and audience.
