The specter of death in a Guatemalan highland community
Geographical review • 57 (2) • Published In 1967 • Pages: 151-167
By: Horst, Oscar H. (Oscar Heinz).
Abstract
The title of this article is rather misleading in that the real subject matter is the problem of increasing population in the village of Ostuncalco. The author's data were gathered from census reports from 1880 to 1964, from the U. N. Demographic Yearbooks, and from field work, although the author does not specify when or for how long he was in the field. Category 166 was used for seasonal migration. Chapter subheads are: the domain of the Mam; the growth of population; the role of disease; population pressure on the land; and seasonal migration and its effects.
