Abstract
In this study, Burns has collected from four informants examples of Mayan oral tradition, including origin myths, historical narratives or counsels, curing tales, riddles and jokes. He relates this tradtion to Mayan ecology, history, leadership, and production. He classifies the different kinds of Mayan converstation and speech and shows how most oral tradition is performed as a dialogue that requires an interlocutor. He includes the original Yucatec Mayan of some of the stories.
