This resource functions as a presentation of the applicability of ethnographic data collected from living communities to archaeological work using the example of the making of a harpoon foreshaft which is used for fishing the Pacific green turtle. By examining the similarities and variability in the foreshaft construction, groupings into typological categories could be devised according to normal distribution curves. In addition, the author suggests that using quantitative data would facilitate more general statistical models of artefact typology that are linked to behavioral realities.
