By: Tiller, Veronica E. Velarde.

Abstract
The author, a Jicarilla Apache woman, begins with a critique of previous ethnography on Apache religion and ceremonies, particularly around the puberty ceremony ([n]casta[/n]). She argues that the accounts from non indigenous authors were mostly descriptive, lacking the context of the wider Apache religion and beliefs thereby missing various aspects of the ritual. Through interviews with family members who had undergone the [n]casta[/n] ritual, the importance of Apache myths, cosmology, morals, and prayers are emphasized which further underscores the importance of language and how the rituals prepared initiates for the adult roles of childbearing and child rearing. Document is in the original French.
