Abstract
This is a detailed description of the Jicarilla Bear Dance, or, as Opler prefers to call it, the Holiness Rite which is a ceremony of curing; associated primarily with diseases caused by Bear and Snake. The author analyzes the various elements of the ceremony, describes its mythological background, and concludes the work with brief descriptions of similar ceremonies among other non-Jicarilla groups. These comparative data, from the standpoint of the Jicarilla file, have been filed only in Category 171 (distributional evidence).
