The Jicarilla Apache Ceremonial Relay Race
American anthropologist, n.s. • 46 • Published In 1944 • Pages: 75-97
By: Opler, Morris Edward.
Abstract
This source provides a detailed description of the ceremonial relay race, including its ideological background in Jicarilla Apache myth, preparation of the race-course, ceremonial dress and ritual preliminaries, and the meaning of associated symbolism. The author concludes that the ceremonial relay race is not simply a borrowing from other cultures, but was 'developed rapidly and fully by the Jicarilla because it was so appropriate to the needs and nature of Jicarilla culture'.
