Abstract
This study is divided into two parts, the first and greatest portion of which deals with the effects of cultural diffusion from the Plains and Pueblo areas on Mescalero Apache society, while the second concerns itself with conclusions for general social theory that may be reached inductively through the analysis of data of this kind. There is much ethnographic information to be found in this source, particularly on material culture. For each of the cultural elements discussed in the text the author discusses its provenance in the Pueblo or Plains areas and whether or not the element was definitely 'borrowed' or merely shared in common.
