The creative role of shamanism in Mescalero Apache mythology

Journal of American folk-lore59Published In 1946 • Pages: 268-281

By: Opler, Morris Edward.

AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This source contains a text (in English) of an oral tradition about the killing of Giant. In his prefatory remarks Opler discusses the themes in the text and the ways the text varies from other similar accounts. It is his contention that the variations are due to the 'reorganization and reinterpretation of familiar materials due to absorbing interest' by the shaman who was the source of the story.
