Abstract
This paper places the renewal of pottery making at Zuni in the twentieth century in its cultural and historical context. Beginning with the pottery made in the Zuni villages at the time of European contact, it traces the development of the Zuni ceramics tradition. The history follows the changing influence of western cultures on Zuni vessel size, shape, and decoration. It then examines 20th century developments in Zuni pottery making, focusing on those community needs and cultural values that gave impetus and direction to the revitalization process that is ongoing in the late 20th century (pp. 133-134).
