Although basically a study of the cultural history of the Southern Utes, this document represents a unique approach to historical analysis--unique in the sense that it attempts to integrate recorded historical events with the memories of such events by the oldest members of the tribe. In 1971 the Southern Ute Tribal Council applied to and received funds from several foundations to create a tribal history that not only would be of general interest to scholars, but also could be used as a textbook in the schools serving Southern Ute children. To prepare this history the Tribal Council selected James Jefferson, a member of the tribe and their public relations director, to gather data on traditional histories from his own knowledge and from interviews with other native informants. Historical depth was provided by Robert Delaney and Gregory C. Thompson through their compilation of data obtained from government documents and other early accounts.
