Abstract
In this comprehensive history of the Navajo reservation, Bailey and Bailey look at the U.S. government-Navajo relations, the implementation of various social and economic programs, and their effects. The authors focus on changes in the Navajo economy in each of four periods: 1868-1900, 1900-1930, 1930-1949, and 1950-1975. They look at the schools and education, missionary activities, development of the cattle industry, livestock reduction program, the postwar depression, and the rehabilitation programs beginning in the 1950s. The authors are good at conveying the federal and state tensions over reservation development and the ability of the Navajo to respond to changes in policy and negotiate terms favorable to themselves.
