Abstract
This extensive collection of Navajo omens and taboos could only have been written by someone who has lived intimately with the tribe over a long period. Mrs. Newcomb and her husband began operating a trading post around 1915 and continued to live there for some time. Her information comes not only from personal observation, but also from Navajo informants, and twenty white traders. The material covers taboos related to the house, birth, death, farming, birds, reptiles, animals, foods, occupations, personal activities, water, rain, fog, wind, lightning, and ceremonials.
