The Female Shooting Life Chant: a minor Navaho ceremony

American anthropologist, n.s.38 • Published In 1936 • Pages: 634-653

By: Wyman, Leland Clifton.

Abstract
This is a detailed account of a Female Shooting Life Chant which was sung over the author in August, 1935, near Pinedale, New Mexico. The ritualistic acts are interpreted as being symbolic, commemorative of occurrences in myths of the past, and 'therapeutic.' At the time the ceremonial was held, Wyman was associate professor at Boston University's School of Medicine and was making an intensive study of Navajo medicine and ceremonial practice.
