Abstract
This is a collection of documents on the Yurok village of Tsurai from the time of discovery to its abandonment. The four ages represented are: The prehistoric period; the period of discovery and exploration, 1775-1800; the period of exploitation, 1800-1849, represented by the activities of the fur traders; and the period of decline and fall, 1850-1916, which commenced with the coming of gold miners. Materials for the reconstruction of the prehistory come from archaeological discoveries made by the University of California expedition in 1949. Documents on the second and third period are extracts from the journals of Spanish and American seafarers. Reports on the last period are written by observers on the scene during the hectic gold-rush days. In some cases, the information collected here is repetitive and occasionally misleading. However, it does present a picture of Yurok culture as it developed historically. Notes by the editors are found on pp. 193-207. They should be consulted for the correction of doubtful observations made by the various writers.
