Abstract
This is a thorough reconstruction of Tillamook culture and society, mostly based on interviews with a key informant, Clara Pearson (1871-1948); notes from Franz Boas’ 1890 fieldwork are included for comparative purposes. The editor adds a biography of the author and a history of anthropological fieldwork in western Oregon, including biographies of key Tillamook informants. Among the broad range of topics covered are: subsistence, social organization, medicine, life cycle (esp. reproduction, marriage and death), world view, religious ceremonies, shamanism, spirit quests, and guardian spirits.
