AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
Most material for this source was obtained from Robert Meldrum, a trader for the American Fur Company who lived in Crow territory for most of his adult life and married into the tribe. Some very interesting data can be found regarding Crow clans, marriage regulations, chieftainship, descent of property, dances, naming ceremonies, parent-in-law and children-in-law relationships, polygamy, dialectal changes in the language, mortuary customs, religious beliefs, personal hygiene, position of the mother's brother in society, daily routine, and religious oaths. Also included is a detailed study of the Crow Medicine Lodge Ceremony (Sun Dance). There is additional information on the Mandan, Blackfoot, and Hidatsa.
