By examining the lives of Arapaho individuals from different generational cohorts, the author discusses how people adjusted to reservation life by focusing on education and property allotments. There is also a discussion of the original age-grade system and the complementary role of women in it in both the pre-reservation and reservation periods based upon archival research, though the author also draws from ethnographic study. The author concludes that since younger generations were unable to achieve status in warfare, they focused upon gaining status and knowledge in the peyote cult, ghost dances, and sun dances thus signaling only a certain amount of assimilation.
