This study focuses on gender relations and their relationship to the age-grade system of the Southern Arapaho, contrasting communities during the pre-reservation and reservations periods. The lived experiences and careers of five birth cohorts, born between 1815 and 1899, are compared to conclude that though the age-grade system was primarily a male institution, woman participated in vital supportive roles. That is, without their wives, husbands could not be successful in achieving ranks that benefited both the husband and wife. In addition, independent of her husband’s rank, women were able to become healers and priests, the highest grades within Arapaho society.
