An ethnographic account of the Arapaho knowledge system and its connection to their concept of life force, personhood, and the age-grade system as well as points of tension with the European knowledge system based on literacy, record-keeping, and abstract space-time concepts. Thus, as social life became less communal on the reservation, extended families vied for control of both property and knowledge but nevertheless the Arapaho have held onto their traditional world view and system of knowledge. The author also identifies four values that define different aspects of personhood and social relationships: pity, respect, quietness, and craziness.
