The social organization of the Fox Indians

By: Tax, Sol.

Abstract
In this article Tax describes the kinship system of the Fox Indians at the time of his fieldwork was in 1932 and 1934. He describes his methodology and concludes that 'clans', or "gentes", in the way they are customarily defined, do not actually exist among the Fox. According to Tax, the Fox "gentes" are nothing more than ceremonial cult groups surrounding the sacred packs. The most important kinship group among the Fox is the bilateral kindred. For a review, see Michelson (1938).
