Letter--no. 56. Rock Island, Upper Mississippi
Illustrations of the manners, customs, and condition of the North American Indians • 2 • Published In 1876 • Pages: 207-217
By: Catlin, George.
Abstract
In this letter Catlin discusses some of his observations on the Sauk and Fox in the Illinois area in 1836. The text is copiously illustrated with engravings based on Catlin's paintings of Indian life and leaders. What slight ethnographic information there is centers mainly on dances and treaty agreements with the United States government. Since the author treats the Sauk and Fox as a single culture unit, the material has been marked for appropriate category numbers except in those cases where the material has been identified as pertaining to the Sauk alone.
