Abstract
This document consists of 50 magico-medical and love formulas contained in the notebook of a Cherokee shaman who died in 1938. The magico-medical formulas include those for burns, blisters, fever, headache, gunshot wounds, dental ailments, intestinal disorders, arthritis, snake bite and muscular injuries. The love formulas include those for attracting the opposite sex and warding off rivals in a love affair. Each formula is presented in the author's original Cherokee syllabary along with the editors' literal translation, free translation and commentary. The editors' comments include discussion of the symbolism and religious elements in the formulas and the therapeutic procedures and medicines that accompany the use of the formulas.
