AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is a history of the Syrian Ladies' Aid Society of Boston from 1917 to 1932. Shakir discusses the history of the society from the standpoint of three periods: from 1917 to 1920 when the club was establishing itself and defining it character and mission; 1921 to 1928, when it had consolidated its position within the community; and 1920 to 1932, when, though the club continued to flourish, it also found itself at the center of controversy (p. 134). Each period is discussed separately in the text with a final statement on its status in the 1960s. In this later period (i.e., the 1960s) the name of the organization has been changed to the Lebanese-Syrian Ladies' Aid Society.
