AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is a study of the massive influx of Mariel boat people to Miami in 1980, and their effect on the Anglo and Cuban American inhabitants of the city. The authors discuss the structural changes that took place in the city to accomodate the immigrants, and the political repercussions of their presence on the municipal, state, and national levels of government. Portes also describes the efforts of the Miami Herald in attempting to stem the tide of the Mariel immigration through its daily newspaper articles -- a brief content summary of which appears in this work.
