Abstract
This source was written by a missionary of the Reformed Francescan (Recollect) order, during the eleven years (1675-1686) in which he lived among the Micmac (Gaspesian) Indians in what now constitutes the province of New Brunswick, Canada. The source which was originally written in French, has been translated into English and edited by William F. Ganong of Smith College, and it is this English version which appears here. The ethnographic data presented in this source pertain to: topography of the region, origin of the Micmac according to their own tradition and European speculation, birth customs, clothing, ornament and personal toilet, dwellings and family life, food and food preparation, language, religion, mythology, shamans, chiefs, physical appearance and general health of the people, marriage customs, warfare, hunting, recreation and native medicine. In most cases these data appear as incidental information in discussions of missionary activities among the Indians with their concomitant theological implications. The introduction to this source, pp. 1-46, has not been processed since it deals primarily with the physical structure of the book, and a biography of the author, nor have pp. 304-444, since they deal with the author's return to France, and the original French version of the 'New Relations'.
