Kinship terms and cross-cousin marriage of the Montagnais-Naskapi and the Cree

American anthropologist, n.s.34 • Published In 1932 • Pages: 171-199

By: Hallowell, A. Irving (Alfred Irving).

Abstract
This study is a listing and reconstruction of Cree and Montagnais-Naskapi kin terminologies. Hallowell summarizes all of the evidence for cross-cousin marriage which may be inferred from the linguistic data available in both published and unpublished vocabularies of the Cree-Montagnais-Naskapi dialects, using Strong's Barren Ground Band material as a basis for comparison (see 7: Strong, this File). He draws the conclusion that all of these Northeastern Algonquin groups originally practiced cross-cousin marriage. Hallowell was Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania.
