Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences38 • Published In 1948 • Pages: 166-173

By: Ewers, John C. (John Canfield).

Abstract
This article contains two first hand accounts of Blackfoot warrior self-torture. There is discussion of the combat circumstances which (generally) appear to have given rise to the warriors' vow to undergo this ordeal at a future public ceremony. Some attention is also given to the incidence of this practice among Blackfoot and non-Blackfoot, and to its presumed temporal limitations.
