Abstract
Denig traveled and lived in the Northwest as an employe of the American Fur Company (1836-1856) and wrote a fair bit on the tribes of the Upper Missouri. In 1854 he finished writing his major work, the 451-page-long 'Indian Tribes of the Upper Missouri,' which was published posthumously in 1930. He wrote this short article afterwards for the Missouri Historical Society. In the article Denig discusses the Assiniboine country, climate, major bands and their location, the chiefs Foolish Bear and Gauché, major battles, and the signing of the Fort Laramie Treaty.
