This article was written by an assistant in the University of Pennsylvania Museum and his wife, both of whom were full-blooded Tlingit Indians. Louis Shotridge's father was head chief of the Raven side in Chilkat. The article contains descriptions and plans of Chilkat dwelling houses and food-preparing houses, a summary description of Chilkat social organization, a description of house posts and screens with heraldry, and the totem legend of the Kagwantans clan of the Tlingit. A chart of Chilkat social organization is appended.
