Crime and punishment in Tlingit society

Abstract
This article is a summary of the main types of Tlingit crimes and their punishment. The article shows clearly the importance of clan organization and individual status in the apprehension of culprits and the execution of justice. The article also discusses the possibility of evading justice through the machinations of the shamans. The differentiation between criminal acts and shameful acts and the role of public pressure in the maintenance of social norms are also discussed.
