Abstract
The author, known by the Eskimo name Nutchuk and the American name Simeon Oliver, was brought up in a mission home in Unalaska. He came to the United State to go to college and remained here. This is his second autobiographical work—the first 'Son of the Smoky Sea' covers his youth while the 'Back to the Smoky Sea' deals with his adult life in the United States and his war service with 'Castner's Cut-throats.' In 1938, he visited the Aleutian Islands and in Chapters 13 and 14 (pp. 123-152), he describes this visit. The sections of these chapters which supplement the information on the Aleuts are included. The source is of value primarily for its presentation of Aleut attitudes toward the United States and its policy in Alaska.
