Stories, myths and superstitions of Fox Island Aleut children

Journal of American folk-lore60Published In 1947 • Pages: 62-72

By: Ransom, Jay Ellis.

Abstract
The author, who was a school teacher at Nikolski Village, Umnak Island, presents here 31 compositions by Aleut school children, with footnote annotations. The compositions are all included in category 539. In using these stories it must be remembered that they contain traditional and fabricated elements. Although Mr. Ransom lived with the Aleuts, he is not considered a reliable observer—partly because his command of the language was poor.
