Abstract
The author spent 1909 and 1910 in the Aleutian Islands as leader of the Ethnological Division of the Kamchatka-Aleutian Expedition sponsored by the Imperial Russian Geographical Society of Petrograd. The present work is a summary of Aleut culture, past and present, based on early sources, the author's archaeological research, and his personal contacts with Aleuts and religious and administrative officials stationed in the Aleutian Islands. The author covers the history of the discovery of the Aleutian Islands, the economic and cultural activities of the Aleut, their relationship system, mythology and measures, and their physical characteristics. He includes many photographs of contemporary Aleut life and of modern Aleuts depicting ancient Aleuts. These have not been reproduced for HRAF. This work is of value primarily for its picture of contemporary Aleut life and for its material on kinship. The first two chapters are devoted to the history of the discovery of the Aleutian Islands and a description of the early Aleut. In these chapters the author quotes extensively from Steller's journal and from Veniaminov. Since translations of Steller's journal (See 6: Golder) and of Veniaminov (See 1: Veniaminov) are included in the files, direct quotations from these works are not included here. Jochelson's comments on the early sources, however, are included.
