AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
THE FACE OF FAITH is a photographic essay reflecting the total image of the Hasidic community of Williamsburg, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, as it existed and evolved during the 1950s-1960s. The work represents '…an exercise in the use of photography as a tool of sociological research, supplementing objective and impressionist or descriptive presentations' (p. 113). Kranzler believes that while the pictures by themselves do not offer more than factual, esthetic surface insight, yet when coordinated with other background information such as the cultural values, ideals, and aspirations of the individuals or groups shown in the photographs, '…permit a meaningful synthesis of correlated subjective and objective substantiation' (p. 113).
