This article discusses the interaction between American educators and parents, Italian professors, representatives of the Italian government, and Italian Americans in establishing a program of Italian language instruction at the elementary school level in California. Sensi-Isolani describes the various misunderstandings and antagonisms that developed as people from two different cultures tried to work toward this common goal.
