Abstract
This Ph.D. dissertation compares Mexican-American and Anglo lay midwifery in San Antonio, Texas, emphasizing the importance of sociocultural factors in childbirth practices. The subjects covered in this study are lay midwifery in general, birth ideologies, the American way of birth, a comparison of Anglo and Hispanic midwifery, boundaries of Anglo and Hispanic midwifery, data on the careers of two midwives, a description of a lay midwife attended home birth, notes on statistical information of births and fetal deaths, and a glossary of medical terms. Most of the data on Anglo midwifery have not been categorized for this file.
