This is a study of religious acculturation among the Hausa of northern Nigeria. Greenberg bases his work on historical records and field experience in both pagan villages and the Muslim city of Kano, presenting a summary of the pagan culture, a detailed analysis of the pagan religion, and an examination of the diffusion of Mohammedan culture through the Malams, a native class of learned men. Greenberg treats also the resulting religion which is a combination of pagan, Muslim, combined, and newer features.
