Environmental knowledge and pastoral migration among the Wodaabe of south-eastern Niger

Abstract
This is a detailed, ecologically-attuned study of pastoral decision-making. Herder group knowledge of the environment is extensive: they consider soil type, rainfall patterns, grass varieties, waterhole locations, and herd composition and health as they make decisions regarding daily and seasonal movements. It is evident that the herders not only manage their livestock but also the grasslands in order to avoid overgrazing.
