Herd reconstitution: the role of credit among Wodaabe herders in central Niger

Abstract
This article examines the impact of the 1968-1973 drought on fourteen WoDaaBe herding households. Families were unable to maintain even the small nucleus of a herd necessary to reconstitute it. They were forced to sell dairy cows and young males in exchange for food, and to send household members to work in the city, reducing number of herders. The author suggests how credit programs might help herd recovery.
