Abstract
Generally shallow and given to racial stereotypes, this nevertheless is an early systematic account of Darfur culture and society by an anthropologically-trained European, based on personal observations and interviews with a young Darfurian man the author hired as domestic servant. Themes covered include economic activities, marriage customs and family life, organization of village communities, aspects of traditional governance under the Fur Sultanate, and relations with neighboring ethnic groups.
