This is a study of human relations in Israel, particularly in terms of assimilation processes, between elements of the Middle Eastern culture represented by Oriental Jews, and Western culture represented by European Jewish immigrants. Patai claims that in the clash between Middle Eastern and Western cultures, in almost every instance Middle Eastern culture has succumbed. To give credence to this statement the author describes the historical background of the cultures involved, the unfolding, the phenomenology, the critical aspects, and the outcome of the problems created by the presence in Israel of two major groups of population elements each differing basically in cultural characteristics. In the contact situation the degree and rate or oriental assimilation depended on a number of factors such as the relative strength of the two groups involved, the intensity of contacts, the degree of prestige enjoyed by each group in the eyes of the other, and the practical usefulness of the traits offered by the exponents of western culture (p. xii). Chapter 8 of the book (pp. 216-263), deals with non-Jewish minorities in the Middle East, and has not been indexed with OCM subjects.
