Abstract
The author of this article spent three years organizing and directing the Near East Foundations rural improvement program in some thirty to thirty-five villages southeast of Tehran. The village described in this article is a composite generally typical of the central Iranian plateau.' The author calls his village Aliabad and his typical farmer Hosayn Isfahani. Along with data about living standards, land ownership, water supply, health, and adult education, this article indicates the efforts made by the Foundation to avoid upsetting village social structure by encouraging local leadership and initiative wherever possible.
