AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This source is perhaps the best general discussion of modern Iran appearing in English, and while the period covered extends only to 1932 the material provides an excellent background for the study of more specialized recent works. Wilsons emphasis is placed primarily on the historical development of economic, political, and financial institutions, and his analyses throughout are scholarly and objective. While there is little actual ethnography in this work, the authors understanding of Iranian national character provide the researcher with essentially more valuable data than are usually found in other sources dealing with the picturesque side of Iranian life. The entire source has been processed for the files. The author was a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army on duty in Iran from 1907-13. He served as British Consul in various cities of Iran from 1913-14 and from 1918-20, and was employed by the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company from 1921-32. In addition to this volume, Wilson was the author of a number of more specialized works on Iran, including his Bibliography of Persia, which was the most comprehensive listing of European source materials published to 1954.
