Abstract
This first systematic study of the Ovambo (Ambo) by a missionary draws on years of extensive travel and a variety of informants, from the reigning King and other tribal dignitaries to diviners to ordinary folks. Themes include political organization and leadership succession, inter-tribal relations, settlement pattern, economic activities, religious practices, organized ritual, and marriage and family life. Other topics include aspects of mythology, attitudes toward missionaries, and the effects of labor migration to South Africa.
